The Young Scientist Awards
See the Honour Roll in the Hall of Fame for the Prizewinners in the 2011 Young Scientist Awards. The STANSW Young Scientist Awards is a major project of the Science Teachers’ Association of New South Wales (STANSW). Young Scientist offers students from Kindergarten to Year 12 worthwhile incentives to carry out scientific investigations. It provides teachers with valuable resources and professional learning opportunities. Students in NSW schools carry out scientific investigations as part of their school’s science program in line with the NSW Board of Studies K-12 science syllabuses. The Young Scientist categories and judging rubrics are designed to support the investigation elements of these syllabuses. STANSW will forward the major winning entries of the Young Scientist Awards to the BHP Billiton Science Awards. Young Scientist at School LevelThe first level of judging the Young Scientist Awards takes place in schools. Entrants at school level can receive a Certificate of Participation. Teachers register their school via a link on this website before the closing date and indicate the number of Certificates of Participation they wish for their students. Certificates of Participation will be sent to these schools in November for every student nominated by their teachers as having completed a scientific investigation. Young Scientist at State LevelSchools are encouraged to send their best entries for state judging (up to 10 in each high school age section and category, and up to 10 in each primary school age section and class). The entries are assessed by trained educators and scientists. There are no entry fees. Teachers register the details of their students and projects online and accompany the entries with printouts of this information. It is imperative that students and teachers wishing to submit entries are aware of the rules of entry into the Young Scientist Awards. For addition information please contact the Coordinator of the awards. PrizesThere are cash prizes for the best entries in each of the age sections and categories at state level. A student nominated for the award of Young Scientist of the Year comes from amongst the category winners. Some of the supporters of Young Scientist also provide special prizes for entries of high calibre. Each year, subject to sponsorship being obtained, two students from amongst winners of the Young Scientist Awards are chosen to represent New South Wales at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) in the USA. The 2012 Intel ISEF will be held in Pittsburgh. Important dates for 2011 Young Scientist
