Professor Barbara Messerle (Macquarie University)
Professor Messerle joined Macquarie University in January 2015. She is a chemist with over 25 years’ experience in teaching, research and academic leadership. She completed her PhD at the University of Sydney in 1987, and has worked at ETH Zürich, Switzerland where she worked with the Nobel Laureate, Kurt Wuethrich, at the University of Sydney, and is currently Head of School of Chemistry at UNSW. She has led the growth of research and undergraduate teaching programs to build strengths in Nanoscience, Medicinal Chemistry, and Energy and Catalysiss at UNSW, and the School is now one of the leading Chemistry schools in Australia. An accomplished and widely published researcher, Professor Messerle’s interest in catalysts for improving the selectivity and viability of the synthesis of important biologically active molecules and pharmaceuticals is of fundamental importance to the fine chemicals industry of today. Her contributions to the Faculty of Science and its greater engagement with industry partners will be invaluable as we increase our performance in impactful research outcomes.
Dr Garth Tarr (UON)
Garth received his PhD in Mathematical Statistics from the University of Sydney and has held postdoctoral positions at the University of Sydney and the Australian National University. His diverse interests include robust statistics, data visualisation, model selection, econometric modelling, educational research, meat science and biostatistics.
Garth has received a number of citations for his teaching and was awarded first prize for the best oral presentation by a student at the Australian Young Statisticians Conference (2013) as well as the EJG Pitman Prize for the most outstanding talk presented by a young statistician at the Australian Statistical Conference (2012).
Professor Peter Aubusson (UTS)
Peter Aubusson is Professor of Education and Head of the School of Education at the University of Technology Sydney. He is a former President of the NSW Council of Deans of Education, and an Australian Council of Deans of Education Board Member. He is a member of the National Initial Teacher Education Advisory Committee and Chair of the NSW Initial Teacher Education Committee.
Peter was a secondary science teacher for ten years before becoming a university teacher and researcher. He has researched science education and teacher learning and development for over fifteen years. He was awarded the UTS Vice Chancellor Medal for Research and Teaching Integration in 2013. He is currently the Chief Investigator on an ARC Discovery Project, Enhancing the Quality of Science Learning Through a Representation Intensive Pedagogy and the Lead Chief Investigator on the ARC Discovery Project, Mobilising teaching: improving the quality of learning with mobile-intensive pedagogies.
With Sandy Schuck, he leads an international group investigation education futures. He recently guest co-edited a special issue in Teacher Development on Teacher Education Futures and is the guest co-editor for an upcoming issue of Research in Science Education on Science Education Futures
Dr Jane Hunter (UTS)
Jane Hunter is an education researcher at the University of Technology Sydney. She is conducting a series of STEM studies in Australian schools; in this work she leads teachers, school principals and communities to better understand and support education change. Her book Technology Integration and High Possibility Classrooms: Building from TPACK is advancing new ways of enacting pedagogy in K-12 schools. Jane was a classroom teacher, and has received national and international teaching awards for outstanding contributions to student learning. She enjoys writing and her research-based presentations at national and international conferences challenge audiences to consider alternate education possibilities. Twitter: @janehunter01
Rod Dowler (ANSTO)
Rod Dowler is Manager of the Discovery Centre at the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO).
'Future vision quiz - Shaping our world with science'
Explore the fascinating future of science and discover how scientists have the power to shape the future of our society. Learn how to avoid having your job taken by a robot, how to reduce global hunger, or how to be the first person on Mars. Through voting keypads, the audience becomes part of the show to look at our bright future in human health, the environment and innovative technology.
Completing STANSW ACSTA event will contribute approx 5 hours of QTC Registered PD addressing Standards from the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers towards maintaining Proficient Teacher.
